The Town Hall - 166 Johnston St (Fitzroy)

Post by Kristyn

Ok ok, so this dinner is actually in Melbourne not Singapore.  I was so excited to come home for a couple of weeks, I have been CRAVING Western food, that I think that these Melbourne meals deserve a place in our blog, if only for me to look back at them every now and again and reminisce....So James and I had date night our first Saturday night back, we ended up just around the corner from our place in Fitzroy at The Town Hall.  This is a one hat restaurant in the Good Food Guide and well deserved too.  The food was AMAZING!  We started off with yellow fin carparccio and some amazing grilled chorizo and bread.  James had crayfish agolonotti with tomatoe and anchovy crumbs for a main and I had eye fillet with potato gratin and red wine jus.  YUM!! I had been craving good steak for so long, and this one was cooked to med/rare perfection.  The food was so good that we both went for dessert as well, which is something that we don't usually do.  James had the tiramisu soaked in strega, kahlua and coffee with marscapone and I had the most delicious (James had dessert envy) apple and blackberry cinnamon pie with brandy anglais.  This was all washed down with a beautiful pinot noir from Tassie and a huge glass of Spanish PX with dessert.  Considering this was a one hat restaurant, it was relatively cheap, the mains are all around $30.  I would highly recommend anyone looking for an amazing restaurant in Melbourne that's not going to break the budget to head here.  I'll definitely be going back next time we're back in Melbs.  It also helps that it's only around the corner from our place in Fitzroy :)

Lerk Thai -Changi Airport Terminal 3

Post by Kristyn

No dinner at an airport terminal can ever be good, and that's the truth, even the name is off putting. Awaiting our flight back to Melbourne this seemed to be the best of a bad bunch.  We ordered mixed vege's, prawn balls (that tasted like the good old crab stick from your local fish & chip shop), minced chicken & shrimp squares (which looked huge on the menu but came out teeny tiny), and the usual suspect chicken pad thai (which also came out teeny tiny).  Far be it for me to actually write anything more about this meal, I'm not sure it deserves much more of my time...all I can say is bring on Melbourne food & coffee!!!

Orange Lantern - 73 Killiney Road

Post by Kristyn

Orange Lantern is a Vietnamese restaurant down Killiney Road (we basically have now tried most places on Killiney).  We've been here a couple of times now.  There's usually quite a few people in here, which is always a good sign.  The food is pretty good, I wouldn't say it's the best Vietnamese I've had, but it's not bad, it's well priced and the service is pretty good.  This time around James had a vegetable soup and a vegetarian wrap and I had grilled beef and rice as seen in the photos.

Octapas - Spanish Tapas Bar @ Clarke Quay

Post by Kristyn

Again, we've already posted about Octapas, but we actually ate here this time. Unlike the other times where it's just been about the happy hour priced sangria and churros.  I am happy to report back though, that the food was actually pretty good.  Being a tapas bar we just ordered a range of yums such as patatas bravas, pork & beef meatballs, croquettes, squid and of course paella, oh and white sangria.  Would happily come back here again for eats and happy hour of course, such a nice setting on the water at Clarke Quay as well.  Especially the view of the boat in the picture with a lady playing a piano on it :P

District 10 Bar & Restaurant - UE Square

Post by Kristyn

Ok, so I might have been craving Western food, which bought us to District 10 one lunch time.  This was a mistake!   You'd think that I would've learnt my lesson after ordering the burger at Bar Bar Black Sheep, but no, no I didn't.  So I ordered an angus beef burger and James ordered bangers and mash and mixed seasonal vege's.  The "cheese" on my burger, quite frankly was disgusting, I basically couldn't eat it at all.  The chips looked like they were handmade, and they might've been, by a McCain's chip making machine.  James wasn't impressed with his meal either, I was also starting to think that he may not have been too impressed with my whole mission to find good Western food in Singapore...

Chicken Rice Express - Killiney Road

Post by Kristyn

Chicken Rice Set

Hong Kong Noodles
Now you cannot come to Singapore and not try chicken rice (no it's not called chicken and rice, just chicken rice), it's one of their national dishes.  You can get chicken rice pretty much everywhere.  The Chicken Rice Express is in our hood, so we go here quite a bit.  I generally always get a soya chicken rice set (see picture) which includes chicken, rice, greens, broth and a lime juice.  James usually opts for the hong kong noodles and mixed vege's.  The lot usually costs around SGD10 so it's a very cheap dinner!.  It's very hard not to get a good chicken rice anywhere and this place is no exception.

More Random Sing Things

Here are some more random things we've come across in Sing Sing...

 Chinchilla at the pet shop...

...and before you start getting ideas about new mittens, they cost about S$500!

Hmmm, interesting treatments at the spa...

Orchard Rd madness for Sunday shopping...

 The footpath to nowhere...
(this more common than you'd think)
 Philips warehouse 'Carnival Sale'...

Philips, plenty of people, not too many cheap goods...

Our window view of the scaff at the building site next door...

More scaff...  our front door is to the right of the bottom window....

Tracking a taxi's distance after booking it via mobile app...

The smallest amount of tissues available at the supermarket...

Din Tai Fung - 313@Somerset

Post by Kristyn

Chilli crab xia long bao
Black Sesame Bun
Round two of Din Tai Fung.  As I said previously these restaurants are located everywhere, so we found another one of them at 313@Somerset, which is one of the closest malls to us.  This time it wasn't nearly as busy, but it could've been from us going at 5:30pm - we were hungry and it's dumplings so don't judge! Again the dumplings were great, we had chilli crab xiao long bao, chilli crab steamed buns, prawn dumplings in chilli oil, duck rolls and of course to finish off black sesame and red bean paste buns - yum!  As great at this restuarant is, I must say that it still doesn't   quite live up to Hu Tong Dumplings back in Melb, but it's the closest by far that we've found.  It's definitely a place to eat at though, and no doubt we'll end up taking some of you there.

Killiney Kopitiam - 67 Killiney Road

Post by Kristyn

Killiney Kopitiam is a huge dinner time favourite of the both of us, luckily it's very close to where we live AND the food is super cheap!  It costs SGD8 for the both of us to eat there, so you can't really go wrong.  There isn't a huge amount on the menu, but everything they have is great.

The photo here is of the Mee Siam.  I'm a big fan of their curry chicken and their prata which is amazing!  If anything we go for the prata, we haven't come across anything as good as theirs, yet.....

Bar Bar Black Sheep – 86 Roberston Quay

Post by Kristyn

So...after four weeks in Singapore and eating Asian delights, I started to miss a bit of the old Western food.  Mostly I was craving steak.  So knowing that good ole’ fave Bar Bar has a bit of Western in the mix, we thought we might give that a go.  After being given the menu and seeing that steak diane was the only option on the menu was a bit disappointing.  I don’t eat cream, so that was a definite no, so I thought I’d try the chicken burger instead.  Now I must make mention that we were warned that the Western food at BBBS wasn’t great.  So while James ordered Indian, I went with the burger...what a mistake that was!  Ok, so the chicken was not in my opinion much chicken.  The “pattie” and yes, I said “pattie” was some sort of minced chicken concoction that was horrible.  Here I was expecting a chicken breast at least, not what was served to me.  I think I ended up eating two bites and deciding for my own health not to eat the rest.  So there you go folks, you’ve heard it straight from someone who has tried....never eat Western food at BBBS whatever you do!

Kith Cafe – 7 Rodyk Street

Post by Kristyn

My quest for the chai latte still continues and again, a friend let me know that Kith Cafe down on Robertson Quay sells chai.  So on the way past one Sunday, I popped in to check it out.  The cafe was pretty full (with expats of course), I had a bit of a squiz of their menu whilst waiting for my ‘earl grey chai tea’?! they looked like they had a pretty nice breakfast menu with some nice toasties etc.  So my so chai/earl grey tea arrived and.....it wasn’t great.  It wasn’t really much of a latte, more of a tea with not much milk and quite watery.  I also wasn’t sure of what to make of the earl grey in the mix (as to me earl grey tastes like dishwashing water), so would I go back for another? Probably not, the only saving grace is that at the moment it’s the closest place I can find that makes them, so for that I might consider or I’d even much rather go without.

Bank A/c's, toiletries, where to eat and shopping...

Post by Kristyn
Ok, so you’re thinking of moving to Singapore from?
Well here are a few handy tips that might help make the process a bit easier:

1.       Opening a bank account

You would assume opening a bank account in a foreign country wouldn’t be too much of a hassle?  You can open one in Australia quite easily as a foreigner.  Well here in Singapore nothing as easy as it sounds, unless you have the golden ticket which is an Employment Pass (EP) which for us was a bit of an issue.  However, in saying that, we were able to open a savings account with DBS with only our passports.  We did have a Singapore address though, so as painful as we thought it would be without an EP, it was a very easy process, I would recommend you head into to the DBS branch in the Scape Plaza, as all they do here is open new accounts, so you won’t have to wait long, like you would in a normal branch.

2.       Toiletries

This is a fairly big tip I’m about to impart on you all – BRING AS MANY TOILETRIES AS YOU CAN FROM AUSTRALIA!  Ok, so whilst I was packing my suitcases for this big adventure, we obviously only had a certain weight we could bring in.  This being the case, I thought I would be smart, and leave behind items that would a) weigh down my bags more and b) that I could easily buy in Singapore.  Makes sense right?  Well.... had I known the prices of common toiletries in this lovely country, I may have thought twice about packing so many shoes, my hair dryer, straightener – nah who I’m I kidding!  But anyway back to the point of my story, basic toiletries are nearly double the price here.  One example here is just normal everyday Vaseline body moisturiser for a 400ml bottle cost me $8.50! This is the case for everything, make up remover, body wash etc.  Don’t talk to me about being blonde either...if you are like me, and use shampoo and conditioner specifically made for blondes, please bring some with you.  Now I did this, as I did figure there would be a slight chance that it wouldn’t be sold here, but with such a large expatriate contingency here, I did live in hope.  I can categorically tell you that all hope is lost!  Luckily I am heading back to Oz in a month, so I will be well stocking up on my usual toiletries and bringing them back across the sea.  As you can gather, there is no such thing as a discount chemist store here, I didn’t realise how blessed we were with Priceline and Chemist warehouse, all purchases are made through the supermarket or general chemists such as Guardian, so be prepared to not shop around, the prices are the same wherever you go.

3.       Hungrygowhere

So we all love urbanspoon, the Cheap Eats Guide and The Good Food Guide back in Melbs to guide us on good places to eat as voted by the public, well if you’re looking for something similar in Singapore look no further.  Hungrygowhere comes in a variety of options such as a webpage and both an apple and android app.   The application works on the same principal as the previously mentioned applications.  You can look for food based on locations, cuisine, ratings etc. And you can bookmark your fave places as well.

4.       Store opening times
Here is a tip for young players, don’t bother getting up early to go shopping because more than likely you’ll find that the store won’t be open.  So embrace the late opening time and have a sleep in, like I’ve been doing.  Generally stores around here don’t open until 11am, some open at 10am, but more often than not it’s 11am, which when you think that they are open until about 9pm it makes sense for them to open later.  We made the mistake the first day after our arrival, but getting up early and heading out to find a Singtel store to buy new sim cards, but alas, we had to wait until 11am.  It’s like a ghost town until then; even restaurants are fairly quiet at lunch time.  Things don’t kick off until into the afternoon and by evening the place is bustling.

Brunetti – 163 Tanglin Road (Tanglin Mall)

Post by Kristyn

In my quest to find Chai latte in Singapore (why is it so hard?), our friends Paul & Phoebe made mention that in fact the Melbourne cake institution Brunetti’s now had opened in Singapore, and they were selling chai lattes.  This to me sounded like we needed to make a hike to Tanglin Mall.  Now Tanglin Mall is at the very end of Orchard Road, and James and I one Sunday thought that we’d go and check it out.  So we caught the train to Orchard station, and got onto Orchard Road and started to walk.  Now Orchard Road on a Sunday is MENTAL.  It’s maids day off here, so most of them end up down on Orchard Road along with all of the tourists here for the GSS.  So after battling through the crowds for 5-10 mins I make mention to James that it looks as though we are heading in the wrong direction...and yep we were!  So we quickly jumped onto the a lot quieter street of Orchard Boulevard and headed the correct way.   When we finally get to Brunetti, it is exactly as Brunetti in Melbourne looks.  So I order us some macaroons, cannoli’s and my tea2 chai latte and life is good.  The macaroon’s and cannoli’s were typically great Brunetti’s and the chai latte for my first one in Singapore was great!  If only Brunetti’s were a lot closer, although my waist line is thinking that might just be a bad thing. http://www.brunetti.com.au/

Nando’s – 163 Tangling Road (Tanglin Mall)

Post by Kristyn

Okay okay, so what is Nando’s doing in our blog?  Well Nando’s used to be our “bad food” of choice in Melbourne, and we also tried one in London last year (it was horrible there).  So before we headed to Brunetti’s we were starving, and to be honest, in Tanglin Mall, there’s not a lot of options, so Nando’s it was.  To be quite honest, it wasn’t bad, the menu was a lot larger than back in Oz.  Even with this extended menu (of which I can’t even remember what was on it), we ordered a wrap and chicken and sides.  It was your typical Nando’s really, not much else needs to be said...other than the fact that you actually get table service here.

Takeaway Pizza from The Foundry

Post by James
The Foundry which is a restaurant area comprising of different businesses such as a bar, thai food, Indian food and western food.  We have eaten there several times but limited ourselves to the Thai food every time – which is really good!  So we decided to branch out and try a pizza from the ‘The Better Burger’ place in next door which sells (you guessed it) Burgers and Pizzas.
The first warning came when we had to decide on the size of the pizza.  Basically, we had a choice of tiny, medium (which I could eat by myself if pushed) or absolutely massive!  Price wise, the medium was about S$18-23 while the ‘Massive’ was around the S$40 mark.  We opted for the Medium despite my objections that it wouldn’t be enough to feed the both of us, so we compromised with a Greek salad as well.

On the way back home we decided to buy a bottle of wine from the Wine Connection.  We ended up with an ok Sancerre (French Sav Blanc) for about S$38. When we arrived back home I couldn’t wait to tuck in to our new found box’o’joy, until I opened the lid.  It looked like a pizza, but did it taste like one?
Sadly, No.  It was bland, not enough sauce, thick dough with minimal topping. One which we certainly won’t be going back for!
Thank goodness we had the bottle of wine, otherwise the night would have been a complete failure…

Baan Khun Nai Thai Cuisine – The Foundry, Mohamed Sultan Road

Post by Kristyn

The Foundry is just around the corner from us and like Bar Bar Black Sheep, there are communal tables, with different eateries surrounding it.  There is a choice of Thai, Pizza, Burgers, Indian, Japanese, Korean and a bar.  We come here quite regularly, but have only really had the Thai, as it’s one of the best Thai’s I’ve had and it’s really cheap.  The pad thai is amazing as is the tom yum soup, the drinks however aren’t as cheap as Bar Bar, we pay $12 for a cider here but at the Bar they’re only $9.90 (can you tell we’re unemployed). Definitely recommend this place for yummy really cheap Thai food.
